Design Specifications

As a class we decided on a set of objectives to give each team a clear purpose for the direction of the project. These objectives were derived from the needs of the clientele as well as our own ideas.

Project Objectives:

· Crushed medication must be kept totally isolated from the unit.

· Each unit must use standard medicine sleeves or containers.

· Unit must be operable by a fifth percentile female as specified by Military Standards of Human Engineering Design.

· Unit must be mobile enough to be placed on or in medicine cart for transport.

· No corded power supply may be used.

· If powered by an alternative power source, the unit must operate per the general specifications for at least one hour.

In addition to the general specifications outlined by the class as well as all federal regulations, the unit must adhere to the following criteria:

· Crushed medication must pass through a 0.040” screen

· Must crush five 600 mg calcium pills within one minute

· A maximum of 12 pounds of force must be required to operate the machine

· Unit must not exceed 20 pounds in weight

· Unit should be portable and able to fit on top of a standard medical cart measuring roughly 1.5 ft x 1.0 ft

· Unit must cost no more than $120

· Noise level output must be no more than 50 dB, or about as loud as a normal conversation

· Unit should be stable so as not to tip over or cause excessive vibrations on the medical cart during operation

· Unit should require no maintenance or excessive training to operate
